"The cloud" is one of those trendy tech terms a lot of people use but can't clearly define. What is the cloud? When do you encounter it? How can it benefit your business?

If you use any kind of social media or online data drive, you're already using the cloud; you just may not realize it.

What is the cloud exactly?
The first thing you should understand about the cloud is that it is not a physical thing. The cloud is a network of servers performing various functions to provide services.  Read here for more on the Cloud.

Outlook Keeps Re-Downloading the Same Emails!

10/19/2016

I recently had a customer that upgraded from Microsoft Outlook 2007 (same for Outlook 2003) to Outlook 2016.  Once the software upgrade was complete, Outlook 2016 repeatedly tried to re-download all 18,000 of his emails, although unsuccessfully multiple times!  Yes, all 18,000 of them; you read that right.  As you may know, with new versions of software, come improvements.  The Outlook 2007 limit for how large the email file (not mailbox) container holding all his emails was only 2GB although the newer Outlook 2016 limit is 50GB.  Since he was re-using the Outlook 2007 email file, when he upgraded to Outlook 2016, the old 2GB size limited carried over since it was a file limitation, not a software limitation.  In order to solve the 2GB limitation, I had to create a completely new email file for him using Outlook 2016.  Among other things, this required recreating, from scratch, his Outlook 2016 email account.  As an FYI, I did not find anything about how to solve this problem on the Web.  If you are experiencing this problem and would like help, please contact me to schedule an appointment!  It's an easy fix, but very involved in getting it right.

While the majority of those who’ve upgraded to iOS 10 have so far reported their satisfaction with the vastly enhanced software, not everyone is feeling the love from Apple’s latest installment of iOS. Of the estimated 36.66% of users that are currently running iOS 10, according to the latest figures from MixPanel, a sizable portion of them are now reporting that after upgrading, their devices are draining battery life at a substantially faster rate than they were while on iOS 9.  Read on for more information!

Samsung Galaxy Note 7 Discontinued

In case you haven't heard, the new Samsung Galaxy Note 7 smartphone has been permanently discontinued due to ongoing battery fire issues that it has not been able to resolve.  It was rushed to market in order to compete against Apple's newest iphone 7 and 7 Plus.  Samsung announced Monday this week that it is suspending sales of the smartphone after reports that some replacement devices were also spontaneously igniting. On Tuesday, Samsung announced that it is halting production, and a spokesman told NPR's Elise Hu that production will not resume.

"This is the end" of the phone model, Elise says.  The Wallstreet Journal expects the financial hit to Samsung to be estimated between $4-$5 Billion, although the actual damage won't be known til everything settles.

The news comes after Samsung announced last month that it would recall 2.5 million Galaxy Note 7 smartphones amid reports that batteries were overheating and were a safety risk.   Read more here and here on the financial hit.

A Full Week of Battery on a Single Charge?

10/7/2016

The days of Lithion-Ion batteries that charge our phones, tablets, laptops and other devices are limited.  After all, Lithion-ion batteries have been around since the 1990's, so almost 30 years now, which is an eternity in terms of tech years!  Fuel cells are much more durable than lithium-ion batteries.  Most lithium-ion batteries are rated to last 500 cycles (charging a dead battery to full power) before suffering from capacity loss, which translates to about 9,000 hours of use, assuming 18 hours of operation per charge. Fuel cells, by contrast, can reliably achieve 40,000 hours of use, greatly increasing the lifespan of smartphones and other gadgets.  This translates into an extra week of battery life one a single charge!  Read this article on more ...
